REA vs IDA Free

A free-tier AI agent against the free tier of the most established commercial disassembler. Different generations of tooling, different jobs — here is the honest split.

IDA Free

  • Hex-Rays' no-cost tier of IDA, the long-established industry disassembler
  • Interactive GUI workflow: graph views, xrefs, manual annotation
  • Free tier is feature-limited relative to paid IDA — IDA Free is the entry IDA Free keeps free (decompiler and some architectures are paid-tier)
  • Proprietary; license terms govern use
  • Best for: learning classic manual RE in the tool the industry standardized on

the real difference: IDA Free walks, REA plans

IDA Free gives you a superb map and expects you to read it. REA gives you an agent that walks the map for you — and shows its citations. If you are learning, the map teaches; if you are shipping, the agent scales. Many workflows end up using both: the agent for breadth, the GUI for the two screens that actually matter.

compatibility note for IDA Free (from our lab)

These are complements, not competitors: REA's decompile tier lists IDA — beyond IDA Free — as one of its three engines. An IDA installation is something REA can drive — not something REA replaces.

verdict

CHOOSE REA IFYou want question-driven analysis with an evidence trail, starting at zero cost, inside an agent workflow you already use.
CHOOSE IDA FREE IFYou want to learn the classic GUI discipline — xrefs, graph views, manual annotation — on the industry-standard disassembler.

faq

Is IDA Free enough for beginners?

For disassembly and reading binaries, yes — the free tier covers core interactive analysis. Its main limits versus paid IDA concern the Hex-Rays decompiler that IDA Free omits and some processor modules. For agent-driven ELF layout analysis at zero cost, see our REA setup guide.

Can REA and IDA Free be used together?

Yes. REA treats supported engines as external tools; IDA is one of its deep-analysis engines in the paid/registered tier. IDA Free specifically is not the registered engine — full IDA with registration is.

Which is more legal to use?

Both tools are legal; the target determines legality. Use them only on software you own or are licensed to inspect — see our AUP.
